Letter to Parents
Dear Parents,
I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year in Healthful Living and Physical Education with your student. I am writing this letter to inform you of just a few things your student will be participating in throughout this school year while enrolled in this course.
This year in addition to the Health and PE portions of the course students will be able to participate in a third rotation where they will engage in a variety of fitness activities. At the end of last school year the department decided to designate funds to this newly incorporated Fitness component. As a result Healthful Living teachers were able to purchase a variety of fitness equipment ranging from exercise bikes, resistance bands, low weight kettle bells, medicine balls, and a Nintendo Wii. Through this Fitness component the department is hoping to provide students with an additional outlet that allows them to track their daily physical activity, as well as the healthy routines they wish to adopt.
The Fitness component will also provide invaluable information for each student and gives them the opportunity to promote active lifestyle habits, and exercise regularly. With the fitness rotation, our students will be encouraged to set attainable goals for themselves that will allow them to lose, and/or maintain a healthy weight. As previously stated the student’s data will be recorded daily, helping the make certain that their efforts in both PE, and Fitness class, as well as other recreational activity outside of class counts for something.
The school has sets of mini iPads, as well as laptops that are available for checkout by teachers. These mini laptops, and iPads will allow me as the instructor to incorporate technology into most of their lessons, to help increase their understanding of certain material. Using technology tools such as Food Tracker located on the MyPlate website, which is ran by the government is an example of how students can use the Internet in positive ways that promote healthy living. Interactive sites such as Socrative will also be used to assess students both formally and informally, in place of the traditional use of paper and pencil. Students will have the opportunity to work with the news article site News ELA, this will be implemented to help increase and promote literacy. These things help keep students engaged in the material so that they are able to obtain the level of knowledge and skills needed to lead and maintain a healthy lifestyle even into adulthood.
Students are NOT being required to wear their PE uniforms as they have in past years, however, your student will be expected to wear the proper athletic gear (Tennis/Athletic Shoes, T-Shirts, Shorts/Sweat/Windbreaker Pants) when in PE and Fitness rotations. Students MUST have all three components in order to get FULL credit for dressing out, if one of the three items are missing or inappropriate the student will not receive all three points that day. If your student has PE uniforms leftover they are welcome to continue to wear them, there are also extra uniforms available for purchase (email me if interested).
We look forward to an exciting semester, using this new technology to bring safety, enjoyment, and an individualized approach to daily activity and healthy living.
Sincerely,
Ms. McCoy
